Are Solar Panels Reliable In The Winter?

If you reside in a region that experiences long, harsh winters you may be wondering if solar panels would work on your home. After all, days or weeks of dark skies, snow flurries or monsoon rains hardly seem compatible with a technology that depends on the sun to run it.

However, there has been a lot of innovation and improvement in solar panel technology during the last 10 years. Now solar technology is far enough along that solar panels can easily produce electricity even during inclement weather conditions.

Off grid systems will include a set of storage batteries (similar to a car battery) that are to hold any excess power that your solar panels produce during the daytime. If your battery storage system is correctly designed for your region, it will include enough of these batteries to store power for the number of cloudy days that are typical for your geographical area.

If your system is tied to the grid (connected to the local electric company) it won’t use storage batteries. After the sun goes down or if there are several days of inclement weather blocking the sun, your system will automatically use electricity from the local power company. You’ll still be reaping the benefit of reduced power costs because on sunny days your electricity will be generated by your own solar panels.

Some power companies may even allow you to sell electricity back to them.   This is yet another way solar panels can prove cost effective. The way this is set up is that unused electricity generated by your solar panels goes back into the grid and you received credit for it on your bill.  That way, even if you have to use electricity from the grid during the night or during cloudy days, any unused energy that your solar panels were able to produce will still be reducing your overall energy costs.
