Solar Power: Solutions at Home

With a current energy crisis and peak oil an ever present risk it is no wonder that more people are getting interested in renewable energy sources – and in particular in the abundant solar energy. There is hardly any energy source available that is more environmentally friendly and easy to obtain, than solar power.

Solar power solutions for your home have so far been seen as too costly and complex to install. Would you be surprised to hear that it can actually be quite economical and easy to install solar power at your home? By installing solar power solutions at your home, you can significantly reduce your utility bills and contribute to the next generation being left with a green and functioning environment.

This article introduces three possible solar solutions for your home:

Solar oven: Using a solar oven or cooker is the easiest application of solar power. There are box cookers, panel cookers or parabolic cookers. By concentrating the sun rays into one area through use of reflective material arranged in a certain way, they allow you to generate enough heat for cooking and baking.

Solar Heating Systems: A solar heating system has one or several solar collectors through which pipes are threaded. The pipes are filled with an antifreeze-type fluid, which is heated by the sun. The heat exchange is happening in the hot water storage tank, where the pipes from the solar collector are threaded through. The hot water system and the solar collector pipes are both closed systems and only the heat is exchanged in the hot water tank – not the fluid.
There are active systems, where the fluid is moved by pump and passive systems, where the fluid moves by natural convection.
You can use the generated hot water for different purposes, like running hot water for kitchen or bath, for house heating or even heating the pool, if you have one.

Solar Power Generation: The light rays of the sun can be turned into electric current by using certain materials, which is called a photovoltaic effect (PV). Did you know that this was already discovered in the 19th century by a young French physicist? Albert Einstein was later awarded the Nobel Prize for describing the photoelectric effect as the basis for the photovoltaic process.

It was not until the sixties and seventies of the 20th century that the PV technology was made more reliable and also cheaper by the space industry using this technology in their space craft.

Several solar cells can be connected to form a photovoltaic module. The amount of voltage and current generated depends on the size of the PV module and the amount of available sun light.

Solar energy either has to be used when available or stored, as no solar power is available at night or during very overcast days, which is one of its greatest disadvantages. For your solar power solutions for your home you would have to use rechargeable batteries to store the excess solar energy.

These days you have no problems finding good and efficient solar cells.

Even as an inexperienced handyman can you create your own do-it-yourself solar power solution for your home and save a lot of money along the way plus show you are environmentally responsible and good to nature at the same time.
